Climate Action Centre to host seminar during the Olympic Games
During the Olympic Games, the KTH Climate Action Centre will host a seminar at the Sweden Arena about sports and the climate. The aim of the seminar is to spread information about how sports affect the climate, and what can be done about it to achieve the climate goals.
The connection between sports and the climate is still relatively unexplored. KTH Climate Action Centre’s hope is that the seminar will lead to more people learning about the matter and getting involved.
”It is important that everyone who does sports learns about what they can do themselves, and that international sports events are held with awareness of the climate goals”, says Karin Larsdotter, Deputy Director of the KTH Climate Action Centre.
Climate initatives in the sports sector
The awareness of sport’s impact on the climate is increasing both locally and internationally. Several initiatives are underway from sports associations as well as from international sports events. The Paris Olympics in 2024 will be held as a climate-positive event. This means that the event will contribute to reducing rather than increasing greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
”Sport is very important for health, well-being, and sustainable development. But it must, just like all other sectors of society, pull its weight in the climate work”, says Karin Larsdotter.
During the seminar, KTH Climate Action Centre will discuss how this can be done in practice and what it means for athletes as well as the general public and audience.
The seminar will take place on 17 February.
