FAO’s work on circular bioeconomy and food loss and waste reduction

CE@KTH is delighted to invite you to attend the webinar on “FAO’s work on circular bioeconomy and food loss and waste reduction” with Dr. Divine Njie and Ms Marta Gomez from Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations.

Drawing from FAO’s experience in past and ongoing circular bioeconomy and food loss and waste reduction programmes in different parts of the world, the webinar will shed light on the main constraints and limitations in the application of circular approaches. Key intervention areas in the technological, policy, institutional and legislative dimensions will be highlighted, as well as the potential partnership opportunities with different actors, including academic and research institutions, private sector companies and civil society organizations.

Bio of the speakers:

Divine Njie

Mr Divine Njie earned a Ph.D. degree in Engineering from the University of California, Davis, USA, specializing in Food and Agro-processing Engineering. He also holds B.Sc and M.Sc degrees in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. He joined FAO in 2004 and currently is the Deputy Director, Food Systems and Food Safety at FAO. Previously at FAO, Mr. Njie led the Agro-food industry Group and served as Deputy Director of the Rural Infrastructure and Agro-industries Division, supporting FAO member countries in the areas of post-harvest handling, agro-food processing technologies, agro-industry development and other related domains. He has also served as the Deputy Leader of FAO’s Food Systems Programme. Prior to joining FAO, Mr Njie worked in the private sector in food manufacturing in the USA, and taught agro-processing technologies at the University level in Cameroon and the USA.

Marta Gomez

Ms Marta Gomez San Juan is an agricultural and biosystems engineer in FAO’s Office of Climate, Biodiversity and Environment. She currently acts as strategic advisor to FAO’s work on circular bioeconomy in agri-food systems. Marta works with policy-makers to develop national and regional bioeconomy strategies and develops knowledge products on sustainable and circular bioeconomy. She also coordinates the ‘International Sustainable Bioeconomy Working Group’, a knowledge-exchange platform focused on sustainable transformation of agri-food systems, including through emerging biological innovations and technologies. The Working Group and the FAO project were created after 62 Ministers of Agriculture at the Global Forum for Food and Agriculture in 2015 called FAO to coordinate international work on sustainable bioeconomy.
