Påskfirande och påskledighet närmar sig med stormsteg, även om vårvärmen håller sig borta, men trots att detta är en kortvecka så har jag ändå hunnit delta i många olika utbildningsrelaterade aktiviteter. Den allra första genomfördes redan på söndagen då KTH arrangerade det första tillfället av Öppet Hus. Öppet hus är ett unikt tillfälle då intresserade personer kan få svar på alla sina frågor och funderingar inför högskolevalet. KTH ordnar så att de får träffa studenter, lärare och studievägledare från alla våra grundutbildningar, gå på rundvandringar på campus samt lyssna på seminarier från de olika utbildningsprogrammen. Jag bifogar några bilder från ITM-skolans montrar som visar ett axplock av spännande saker som presenterades:
På tisdagen hade sen KTHs GA (grundutbildningsansvariga) grupp och Per Berglund intressanta strategiska diskussioner i relation till kommande förändringsarbete som ska göras för KTHs alla utbildningar. Tex diskuterade vi de förändrade behörighetskraven för studier på avancerad nivå inom KTH:s civilingenjörsprogram, förändringar av årscykeln för utbildningsinformation, samt bildande av en arbetsgrupp för utredning av KTHs ”Makerspace”.
Sen under lunchen på tisdagen fick den som ville veta hur KTH arbetar med hållbar utveckling en intressant dragning av Göran Finnveden (som är vicerektor för hållbar utveckling och professor i miljöstrategisk analys). En av Göran poänger var att; ”Utbildning för hållbar utveckling omfattar både innehåll, pedagogiska metoder och lärandemiljö. Problem och utmaningar som studenterna möter inom utbildning för hållbar utveckling kännetecknas av komplexitet”. Något som är viktigt för oss att bära med oss nu under arbetet med analyserna av alla ITM-skolans program. Göran berättade också att UKÄ:s gjorde en tematisk utvärdering med fokus på hållbar utveckling under år 2017 och efter denna utvärdering fick KTH glädjande nog omdömet; ”Lärosätet har en väl utvecklad process för arbetet med hållbar utveckling inom utbildning”.

In my last blog I discussed the yearly safety inspections that ITM planned for March. By now we are waiting for the comments from Avanova for each department. Based on this each department will make a plan to correct possible less satisfactorily issues that came up during the inspections.
This time I wish to inform that an external revision of ITM’s work with environment will take place on April 16. The purpose with the revision is to make sure that ITM, as well as all schools at ITM, meet the environmental standards described in the Swedish standard ISO 14001. The ITM work is being administrated by Adde Jeihouni and Charlotte Flodin. Those of you that will be involved have already been contacted and the rest of you will get to know the outcome from the external revision when the report is written.
As a researcher my latest weeks have been full of traveling and new experiences. In the beginning of March I left Stockholm, which had just received lots of snow, to travel to Phoenix in Arizona. This was a contrast since the temperature was 20 to 25 C and the sun was shining all the time. It felt like a great break from the darkness in Sweden. I attended the yearly conference given by the minerals and metals society, TMS2018. It is a huge conference where it is difficult to find people. However, it is also a great meeting place where you can establish new contacts. Here, I presented some work on how to determine inclusion cleanliness online during steelmaking. I got some good input that one of my PhD students could use in the future.
After a short stop in Stockholm I travelled to Japan to attend the annual spring conference organized by the Japanese steel society. I presented some work done by another PhD student on the use of recycled slags for neutralization of waste water in the steel industry. Again, I received very valuable input to the student’s research from the Japanese steel community. Also, I established some contact so that the PhD student can carry out research in Japan 2019, which he really is interested in.
Overall, my presentations and interactions with other researchers have paid off. Not only did I get valuable input that my PhD student scan use, but I also got some new information on new eco-friendly steelmaking processes that I can implement in the education.

LADOK 3
The changeover to the new Ladok system is approaching. Between 11-22 June 2018 (weeks 24-25), Ladok 3 will replace the existing Ladok system at KTH. This upgrade of the system is inevitable, as the existing Ladok is now 20 years old and in many ways outdated. A number of working groups have been appointed at KTH level tasked with ensuring a smooth transition to Ladok3. A number of Education Office employees are members of these working groups. In principle, all education processes have some kind of link to Ladok.
One effect that will be apparent to teachers during the changeover in June is that grades lists will be certified digitally. KTH will be providing information and training on the new Ladok 3 system. These activities will take place on an ongoing basis between April and September 2018. Information will be aimed at studies administration staff, teachers and students. Information to students on what the new Ladok3 means for them will be available on the external website Student at KTH.
All examiners will be required to undergo training in order to be granted authorisation rights in the new Ladok3. This training will be brief and will be provided digitally in Canvas. Further information regarding this will be provided as and when it becomes available.
During the transition, time will be tight with regard to registration of grades in the student registry. A risk assessment is currently being conducted at the ITM school in order to identify any issues relating to the transition. During the changeover and autumn term 2018, studies administration staff will register grades in the same way as at present. What the situation will look like in 2019 is a matter that the school will need to discuss. A SWOT analysis will be prepared to list the respective pros and cons of studies administration staff or, alternatively, teachers entering results into Ladok3 in future.
Studies administration staff will be available throughout the summer and we will also have administrative support available at offices at the beginning of the autumn term to assist with any questions, primarily regarding digital certification.
We will shortly be preparing a communication plan regarding the transition to Ladok3.
EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
The EU General Data Protection Regulation, or GDPR, will enter into force in May 2018. The overall purpose of GDPR is to ensure and strengthen the individual’s right to privacy by protecting their personal data.
KTH is currently carrying out an inventory. ITM has sent out a web questionnaire containing questions from KTH to a selected group. As a public authority, KTH must be able to demonstrate that we comply with GDPR, including for those lists we establish. Ordered lists refers to registers created separately based on data obtained from a system, e.g. HR Plus or Ladok, or directly from the individual. In this context, lists are a compilation of personal data regarding a group of people (e.g. a class). The file format used is irrelevant.
We will get back to you with further information once analysis has been conducted at KTH level.
Staff Survey
The Staff Survey will be conducted between 4-25 April 2018.
In order to participate in the survey, one must have been employed at KTH for the previous three months to an extent of at least 40%.
KTH has purchased a supplementary service from Quicksearch. This means that Quicksearch will compile each school’s results and will present these to the management of each school.
We hope that as many members of staff as possible will take the time to respond to the survey, which will be sent out by email. It is important that school management obtains information about the work environment and how it is perceived, so that appropriate improvement measures can be implemented.

The invitation and agenda for the annual ITM PhD student conference has just been sent out to all PhD students. The topic of this year’s conference is Research skills from different perspectives and includes a lecture/workshop on Presentation skills by Linda Söderlindh. We will also hear about Open Access publishing, get information from THS, and a lecture on Ethics in research – a subject that is always highly relevant. In the evening there is a poster session with the goal to bridge the gap between different research fields i.e. find a PhD student colleague in another area where there is some overlap in interest. The conference takes place April 18-19 at Skogshem and Wijk in Lindingö.

Since one year has passed since Pelle Lundqvist signed off as GA for the ITM-school, I thought it could be a good idea to bring in some of his good ideas to this weeks blog. Pelle was interviewed by Campi recently, since he is a professor “with-a-good-sense-of-sustainable-solutions”. I recommend you all to click on the link and read the wise words of former GA Pelle Lundqvist, very interesting and thoughtful!
So, what else is ongoing? The coming month of March will be an intense time for all program involved faculty. Firstly, all program directors need to execute a program analysis, and in order for them to be able to do that all of us teachers have to make sure that our course evaluations and course analysis are updated and available. Secondly, KTH will arrange Öppet Hus on March 25th and 26th, where several of us will promote our educations. Please market this event if you know anyone who thinks about attending an education at KTH! And thirdly period three is about to be finished, which means that we all are focused on both creating and correcting exams as well as planning for the coming course in period four.
But I still hope you all have the possibility to enjoy the wonderful winter season!
