Processing of personal data in KTH's social media channels

It is important to us that you feel confident about how KTH handles your personal data. Here, we inform you about how your personal data is handled on KTH's official social media channels in accordance with GDPR.

Why do we process your personal data?

KTH processes your personal data on social media in order to inform you about KTH's activities and to answer general questions from followers of KTH's social media accounts.

If you participate in a post on KTH's social media, or if you like, share or comment on posts on KTH's social media, KTH processes your personal data. Your personal data is protected by the General Data Protection Regulation, also known as the GDPR.

KTH's responsibility

When processing personal data, KTH protects your personal integrity by safeguarding your personal data. KTH is responsible for the moderation of social media. However, when KTH uses built-in features in the various channels, such as advertising, the responsibility for personal data may be shared between KTH and the social media platform.

Examples of personal data on social media

Examples of personal data processed in KTH's social media are names, photos and/or contact details.
With KTH's social media we refer to:

  • Facebook
  • LinkedIn
  • X
  • Instagram
  • TikTok
  • Snapchat
  • YouTube

All these accounts are public, which means that all users on these channels can see and read the content.

Legal basis for the processing of personal data

KTH applies the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

The processing of your personal data is necessary for KTH to perform its tasks in the public interest or as part of the exercise of public authority. Your personal data will be processed on the basis of Chapter 2, Section 2 of the Act with supplementary provisions to the EU GDPR.

What is a transfer to a third country?

  • The GDPR uses the term 'third country'. A third country is a state that is not part of the European Union (EU) or a member of the European Economic Area (EEA).
  • Visiting and/or participating in social media may involve the transfer of your personal data to a third country outside the EU and EEA, as social media channels are owned by companies based outside the EU and EEA.
  • According to the European Commission, the US ensures an adequate level of protection provided that the receiving organisation is subject to the EU-US Privacy Framework. Therefore, it is allowed to transfer personal data to the US without taking appropriate safeguards under Article 46 of the GDPR (such as standard contractual clauses or binding corporate rules). This is provided that the receiving organisation is covered by the EU-US Privacy Framework. Currently, Meta and LinkedIn are members of the EU-U.S. Privacy Framework (source: imy.se).

Protective measures at KTH

KTH has taken steps to protect your personal data as much as possible and has prepared this information.

Nevertheless, there are privacy risks for those who visit KTH's social media accounts.

The privacy risks consist mainly in the fact that the possibility to exercise control over the processing of your personal data is limited after you have participated in a post or left a reaction or comment on KTH's post.

It is possible to share KTH's posts on social media. In these cases, KTH has no control over what is written outside KTH's own channels and cannot change or delete the post. KTH therefore recommends that you do not include any personal information in comments, reactions or shares.

How your personal data is stored

KTH adheres to the principle of storage minimisation, which means that personal data is only kept for as long as necessary for the purpose for which it was collected. After that, it is deleted and stored in accordance with KTH's archiving and deletion rules.

The social media channels used by KTH also store your personal data. KTH has no control over how this personal data is stored on each platform.

You have the right to request the rectification or deletion of your personal data. You may also object to the processing of your personal data or request that it be restricted. The request will be considered by KTH.
